Finally after 15 years, the Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was today sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in two rape cases by the CBI Special court Judge, Jagdeep Singh, at makeshift court of Sunaira Jail in Rohtak today. Ironically the rapist dera chief has pleaded for the mercy and was also reportedly crying after hearing the sentence. The CBI had registered the rape case against the dera chief acting on the state of the two dera female followers (Sadhvis) who had alleged that they were raped the dera chief.
The case was registered by the CBI in December 2002 on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Later after recording the statement of the victims and the witnesses chargesheet against the Dera chief was filed in Ambala court in July 2007. The CBI in its investigation revealed that the sexual exploitation of two ‘Sadhvis’ (women followers) between 1999 and 2001. The special CBI court had framed charges against Ram Rahim under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC in September 2008. The two complainants recorded their statements before the court between 2009 and 2010. The special CBI court shifted from Ambala to Panchkula and the case against Dera chief was also transferred to Panchkula CBI Court. In July 2017, the court ordered daily hearing and arguments of prosecution and defence were concluded on August 17, 2017.
