With Mumbai witnessing an intense spell of rains since last night, the Maharashtra government on 2nd July declared a public holiday, asking schools, colleges and offices to remain shut for the day. Mumbai local train services on all three lines – Central, Western and Harbour – were affected with water-logging reported on railway tracks at several stations.
16 people were killed in two rain-related accidents in the city and in the neighbouring Thane.
Wall collapse in Malad East in Mumbai resulted in the death of 13 people. The incident took place at Kurar village, Pimparipada – Malad East and the NDRF teams were deployed for rescue operations.
Meanwhile, at least three people were killed and one injured after another wall collapsed in Kalyan. The incident took place when the wall of National Urdu School in Kalyan (West) collapsed on nearby hutments, resulting in the death of two women and a three-year-old boy.
