Social media has become a crucial part of our daily life. But none of us ever realized that just like there are some set of rules to be followed in real life, akin to this, there are some etiquettes, one should follow while on social media.

Just because no one ever taught you this, here is something we all are guilty of doing, but should never do. At least not after reading this.

Posting before checking

This might seem rather logical but the facts show that, unfortunately, too many social media users still think checking information before publishing is an option, not a requirement. But you see, one wrong post can create a hoax. There is a reason you go for a news app over a social media app to get information. Even you know that it is not credible. Next time, don’t forget to cross check before posting.

Doing Things for Likes

Attaching your perception of yourself, or even your mood, to how many people ‘like’ your post, snap, tweets is unhealthy.

Too many people rely on being acknowledged by others in order to feel good about them. Not getting the expected response from a person or group of people has far too much influence over the daily moods and self-esteem of too many people.”

If social media starts to affect either your physical or mental health, it might be time to sign off and give yourself a break.

Comparing Yourself to Others

A study from the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found a link between social media use and depression, but the mediating factor in this link was the tendency for people to compare themselves to others. But don’t forget that Social Media comes with ‘Filters’. Everything is ‘Made-up’, then why to put yourself down?

“Phubbing”

Snubbing someone you’re around in favour of a cell phone has become so common, there’s now a term for it. “Phubbing is a slang term now used to describe spending time on your smartphone when you are in the presence of other people, especially a romantic partner or love interest. Time spent engaged in texting, email, social media and the like is an increasingly common cause of conflict in modern relationships.

Leaving snarky or critical remarks in blog post comments

Healthy debate founded on facts and informed opinions is a good thing. But many times, in a situation of disagreement, some users tend to abuse in the comment section; such comments are clearly intended to be negative attacks without a basis in fact and with clearly ill intent.

For such people, besides simply deleting their comments, if that’s even possible, there are a number of things you can do to deal with them depending on the platform you’re on: Unfollow them, disconnect with or “unfriend” them, and even report them.
