Eight accused of gangster Kahlwan murder acquitted

The failure of the Punjab Police to put up proper evidence in the murder case of gangster Sukha Kahlwan came to the fore as the court of Additional Sessions Judge Muneesh Arora today acquitted eight accused in the case for want of evidence.

Those acquitted are Gurjit Singh alias Sonu Baba, Kulpreet Singh Deol, Ramandeep Singh, Teerath Singh, Karamjit Singh, Pavittar Singh, Gurpreet Singh alias Sonu and Randeep Singh. There were 12 accused in all of whom two gangsters Vicky Gonder and Prema Lahoria were killed. The remaining two, Sandeep Singh and Jaipal Singh, are absconding.

Making a case that it was all a police conspiracy, defence lawyers Darshan Dayal and Shelly Sharma questioned the fact as to how the cops did not even suffer a scratch in the shootout.

“When the cops were taking Sukha back to Nabha jail, the assailants came in front of their vehicle in a white Fortuner with covered faces and fired shots, killing Sukha on the spot.

The police team consisted of ASI Nirmal Singh, ASI Jaswinder Singh, Head Constable Malkiat Singh, Constable Surjit Singh, Head Constable Mann Singh and Constable Yadwinder Singh in a Trax vehicle. The vehicle was being driven by Head Constable Gursahib Singh. Surprisingly, none of the police officials used any weapon in self-defence,” they questioned.

The court observed, “None of the cops made any attempt to save the slain gangster. The conduct of the police officials does not seem to be natural and certainly creates doubt regarding the prosecution story.”
